CHOCOLAY SENIOR ACTIVITIES CENTER HISTORY

Ten years ago, a group of Chocolay Seniors were given permission by the Township Board, to pursue establishing a drop-in center for local seniors. It would create a local, social activities center for residents, closer to home. The drive into Marquette Senior Center would still be available.

So in February 2014 an organizing committee got together and developed a program offering social activities, games, programs, and outings. Events would be scheduled during meeting times (1:00 – 4:00) on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Township Hall. All activities depended upon interest!

The original numbers were around 35 seniors (60 and older). Now our numbers have dropped to about 15. Twelve usually show up on Tuesdays and eight on Thursdays. This is a self-supporting group, funded by a $1.00 donation (requested on each day of attendance to cover snacks and supplies).

As Chocolay residents, no one should want to lose this program! Supporting the Chocolay Senior Activities Center by joining the group is key. Participation will keep this program going. Social activities for Seniors is essential to good mental health. I hope we never lose this local opportunity available to Chocolay Seniors due to lack of numbers participating. Once it’s gone, it’s gone.
